Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked betting on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to play some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.
The actual improvement in his abilities began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would often compete against each other. Howard was able to access several of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
