Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved playing different card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games while playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly wager against each other. Howard had access into several of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
